It’s New York and Jackie’s in trouble. An ex-con struggling with addiction, he’s trying to go straight and get back with childhood sweetheart Veronica, but can he trust her? It’s a rare and welcome pleasure these days to be leaving the theatre mulling over the characters, and not a take-away “message”.
Bleakly funny.
Blisteringly enjoyable.
A strikingly self-contained show.
A cynical play which only reinforces stereotypes, in spite of some affecting moments.
The quality of the performances is stellar; raw and honest, heartbreaking and tender.
Written with an undeniable, stylish fluidity, the play is a strong example of an inevitably limited genre.
