There are probably enough fans of the original movie to sustain The Classic Screen to Stage Company’s touring version of Rain Man, at the King’s until Saturday. However, as a piece of theatre it never makes a successful case for itself.
Two strong central performances make this a production worth catching, even if there is something unavoidably lost in the shift in scale from screen to stage.
Plays it for laughs at the expense of dramatic tension and emotional engagement.
Short on subtlety, long on good-hearted entertainment value.
A copycat adaptation that cannot escape the classic original’s shadow.
A wonderful, heartfelt story is at the centre of this stage adaptation of Rain Man and it is supported by a strong cast. I would thoroughly recommend catching this show while on tour!
