It’s Baltimore, 1962 where Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. The set is pretty simple but the level of talent paired with the incredible costume design and tight choreography makes this production feel as though you're watching a performance in the West End.
Packed with talent, familiar songs and a heart full of goodness, Hairspray really should be bottled up and sold.
If you love American high-school type musicals, you’ll love Hairspray. If, like me, you’re not a huge fan of this genre then you probably won’t. But most of those going to the Edinburgh Playhouse to see the show this week will have a fair idea of what to expect.
It’s a heart-warming and empowering tale that just makes you want to get up and dance.
This exuberant production, like a can of hairspray, chokes all resistance and smothers all in its course, showcased in the finale as audience members leapt to their feet, encased in the energy of a show telling you to flaunt your inner self, and don’t stop the beat.
You won’t be able to stop the beat of your hands clapping in thunderous appreciation.
