Las Acacias (12A)

Drama

Rubén is a lonely truck driver who has been covering for years the motorway from Asunción del Paraguay to Buenos Aires, carrying wood. However, today's journey will be different. This morning, in a motorway stop near Asunción, Jacinta shows up an hour later to begin a journey by track which is going to take her to Buenos Aires.

The critical consensus

It’s proof of how, cinematically speaking, less can certainly be more.

****(*)Tom Dawson, The List, 08/11/2011

A moving drama set against beautiful Latin American backdrops - just don't expect fireworks.

***(*)(*)Anna Smith, Empire Online, 28/11/2011

Moves off at the pace of a rush- hour M8, but slowly, surely, finds its way.

***(*)(*)Alison Rowat, The Herald, 01/12/2011

Fantastic performances that stay with you and a director who isn’t afraid to let you think for yourself.

***(*)(*)Orla Cunnane, Little White Lies, 01/12/2011

Road trip tale has too much scenery and not enough dialogue.

Paul Greenwood, Evening Times, 01/12/2011

It’s beautifully acted and Giorgelli does manage to steer the film past all the sentimental potholes that could so easily have made this a much bumpier, clunkier journey.

***(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 02/12/2011

A little gem that beguiles and delights.

****(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 02/12/2011

Even the baby gives a good performance. It's a little masterpiece of understated resonance and humility.

Anthony Quinn, The Independent, 02/12/2011

This is a very satisfying love story.

Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 02/12/2011

here are no interesting encounters, the scenery is unremarkable.

Philip French, The Observer, 04/12/2011

Cast against the sandy beauty of the South American landscape, it’s an entirely romanticised and peaceful road trip movie hidden behind its lack of dialogue and scene changes.
