A documentary that follows Hole drummer Patty Schemel as she struggles with fame and addiction.
It is her sometime-bandmates who are less sympathetically portrayed, having watched their drummer be banished without much more than a shrug.
It will be of limited interest to anyone but die-hard Hole fans and grunge nostalgists.
Some more context about the times might have been useful, but as Hit So Hard broadens out to talk about Schemel’s sexuality, it does offer some astute observations on the history of women in rock.
Hit So Hard is a good title for the film. Courtney Love looks like someone determined to carry on doing the hitting.
A carefully constructed survivor's tale. Indie rock aficionados will revel, too, in the incredible access behind the curtain of grunge rock scene; Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love and all.
Hit so-so hard.
