Rise of the Guardians (PG)

Rise of the Guardians (PG)

Animation, Adventure, Family

When the evil spirit Pitch launches an assault on Earth, the Immortal Guardians team up to protect the innocence of children all around the world.

The critical consensus

Peter Ramsey's festive animation is fun and frantic but, somewhere amid the boisterous bouncing off chimney pots and skittering across rooftops, logic and substance are lost.

If Cirque du Soleil overdid the Calpol, it would probably look like this.

***(*)(*)Siobhan Synnot, The Scotsman, 25/11/2012

The audience battles to care or stay awake.

Compare this moderate entertainment to, say, Monsters, Inc., and it really looks feeble.

**(*)(*)(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 29/11/2012

Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Chris Pine and Isla Fisher all contribute enthusiastic voicework, raising what might have been a tiresome trudge into something pretty festive.

***(*)(*)Anthony Quinn, The Independent, 29/11/2012

The year¹s most entertaining animation.

****(*)Henry Fitzherbert, Daily Express, 30/11/2012

A new children's classic.

*****Chris Tookey, Daily Mail, 30/11/2012

It’s gorgeously designed, deftly written and frequently laugh-out-loud funny. For child or adult, this is a fantasy to get lost in.

****(*)Olly Richards, Empire Online, 30/11/2012

Visuals pop off the screen, the action is absorbing and there are even a few chuckles to be had in this rip roaring modern day fairytale.

Joe Walsh, Little White Lies, 30/11/2012

Children may well enjoy it, despite the absence of anything that might pass as imaginative sustenance.

Philip French, The Observer, 02/12/2012
