Performances are perfectly pleasant, but more of Ramona’s flights of fancy and less lingering on the adult romance would’ve added some oomph.
Allen’s resolutely old-fashioned film, adapted from the books by Beverly Cleary, sets out with a mission to spread good cheer and largely gets there. One for Ramonas everywhere.
Wholesome comedy about a family fallen on hard times, suitable for 12-year-old girls. Suitable, but not that entertaining.
Despite everyone's efforts, Ramona comes across as an insufferably spoilt and attention-seeking little horror.
This is sometimes bland beyond belief.
Clocking in at a soul-destroying 104 minutes, it’ll tax the patience of all but the book’s most devoted followers.
There's something almost Victorian about this wholesome family comedy centring on the 11-year-old Ramona, as lovably troublesome as Twain's Tom Sawyer, and as thoughtful and well-meaning as Pollyanna.
Fans of the Ramona Quimby books will be disappointed, but tween girls will love it.
