A documentary that celebrates Rick Hall, the founder of FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and the signature sound he developed in songs such as "I'll Take You There", "Brown Sugar", and "When a Man Loves a Woman".
A stomping good doc.
As Aretha might say, respect.
Could have done with some tightening, but lots to enjoy. Not least the killer soundtrack and a mischievous Mick n’ Keef.
As personal as the film gets, it never becomes overly sentimental or nostalgic; rather, it’s a celebratory work alive with simple pleasures.
There are feuds and break-ups in the story, but there is also an astonishing musical legacy.
Mick, Keef, Aretha, Pickett, Bono (for some reason), Percy, James, Cliff and that white studio band themselves, the Swampers, are the talking heads. But the true narrator is the music.
Affectionate and informative.
