The critical consensus

Sixty years in the making (it was started in 1948, partially finished in 1952 and reworked by director Paul Grimault for a limited 1980 release), TKATM is a masterpiece of animation and imagination.

*****Jamie Graham, Total Film, 07/04/2014

Breathtaking. An animated masterwork that stands alone on its own eccentric plinth.

*****David Jenkins, Little White Lies, 11/04/2014

This beautiful reissued French animation draws on Fritz Lang and seems to prefigure the style of Japanese anime.

****(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 10/04/2014

There's a delicacy and lyricism, a handcrafted quality here not found in contemporary, CGI-animated features.

****(*)Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 11/04/2014

A beautiful, ambitious animated political fable based on a Hans Christian Andersen tale, this French classic took 30 years to complete – and even longer to get to the UK. It’s a real treat.

****(*)Siobhan Synnot, The Scotsman, 20/04/2014
