The critical consensus

Mellow and rich in ironic humour, the film carries an undertow of gentle melancholy; as so often with Ozu, its ultimate message is that loneliness is the human condition.

*****Philip Kemp, Total Film, 12/05/2014

It is a film in a superbly composed minor key.

*****Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 15/05/2014

Yasujiro Ozu's final film, re-released in a restored version, is a stately, slow-burning but very moving family drama.

****(*)Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 15/05/2014

Among Ozu’s — and cinema’s — greatest works.

*****Adam Nayman, Little White Lies, 15/05/2014

Yasujiro Ozu: like Austen, he tells the same satisfying story again and again
