God Help the Girl (15)

Drama, Musical, Romance

Set in Glasgow, Scotland, the film is about a girl called Eve who is in the hospital dealing with some emotional problems and starts writing songs as a way of getting better. Read more …

Songwriting becomes her way forward, leading her to the City where she meets James and Cassie, two musicians each at crossroads of their own. What follows is a story of renaissance over the course of a long, dream-like Summer.

The critical consensus

The film looks lovely and becomes something of a fairytale. It risks curling the toes of non-believers but wins you over in the end by wearing its heart so boldly on its sleeve.

If only the characters were more focussed: as it is there’s a sense that this a heartfelt film, without really touching the heart.

As Marmite-y as Stuart Murdoch's music, you'll find it either winningly charming or irritatingly fey. Either way, its warmth shines through.

The cutesiness will entice/repel viewers in equal measure, but it has a lot of heart, and displays it on its sleeve.

A complex blend of whimsy and depth makes this a promising debut from Mr Murdoch.
