Set in 1974, an authentic and uplifting tale of two friends whose horizons are opened up by the discovery of black American soul music.
You get a sense that [the director] is more interesting in the music scene than the characters themselves, but the authenticity on display is impressive throughout.
Sporadically engrossing.
Even if the plot is slight, Northern Soul scores big with its soundtrack.
While the storyline is a little underpowered, it's so packed with vinyl gems (Edwin Starr, The Salvadores, Frankie Valli) that Northern Soul fans will be doing backdrops in the aisles.
Some sweet melodies but mainly bad noise.
Elaine Constantine stacks up the right sounds in her take on this sweaty, cramped corner of youth history.
Definitely worth a spin.
