The critical consensus

There’s a lot to cheer and boo in The Boy Next Door. And with one mention of the Iliad, it morphs into a shoddy Fifty Shades: a sexy thriller that’s a must-see for all the wrong reasons.

Jennifer Lopez stars in absurd, half-baked erotic thriller.

**(*)(*)(*)Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 27/02/2015

Like a daytime TV movie but a bit glossier and a bit ruder, this erotic thriller throwback is deeply ludicrous – but may certainly be enjoyed on that basis.

**(*)(*)(*)Mike McCahill, The Guardian, 26/02/2015

Verdict: Risibly bad thriller.

There is no satisfying nuance to Noah and Claire’s relationship - he trans-forms overnight from smoothie to headcase - and there are heaps of unintentional laughs. Still, it could suffice if you’re in the mood for a guilty pleasure.

Jennifer Lopez is stalked by the man next door in an exploitative thriller destined for a B-movie TV slot.
