After a humiliating command performance at Lincoln Center, the Barden Bellas enter an international competition that no American group has ever won in order to regain their status and right to perform.
Gail and her co-host John’s commentary is still edgy and hilarious, but Wilson’s shtick has started to grate, the songs aren’t quite as catchy and, with a large cast competing for your attention, Pitch Perfect 2 feels overstuffed.
The golden-larynxed franchise graduates with a merit.
If you loved Pitch Perfect you’ll find plenty to enjoy here because it’s pretty much exactly the same film, but there’s enough wit and warmth that it feels like a worthwhile sequel.
This well-deserved sequel serves up more helpings of bawdy comedy, sisterhood bonding and a college life focused on performing pop standards.
Some spirited slapstick but this sequel ends in feeble fashion.
Verdict: Terrific fun.
A little ‘verse, chorus, verse’ but never humdrum.
Overlong, it could be sharper and funnier but hits enough high notes with its infectious joie de vivre.
It may not quite live up to the uproarious original, but this a cappella sequel outshines most teen comedies.
