After having escaped the Maze, the Gladers now face a new set of challenges on the open roads of a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles.
The first film made ten times what it cost, so solid direction and acting here are backed up with impressive production values. Plus it’s rather fun.
A frenetic, fast-moving sequel.
In a worryingly tedious follow-up, our teenage heroes are out of the Glade and scrambling across a grim, post-apocalyptic CGI landscape.
It’s only recommended for those who have seen the first film and plan on seeing the third, but as middle instalments go this is an entertaining one that’s all the better for being unfaithful to the book.
Rather than Maze Runner 2: We're Gonna Need A Bigger Maze, Scorch Trials ambitiously opens up its world with mixed results: gripping action, so-so script.
Any teens interested in this type of movie are advised to get their hands on Mad Max: Fury Road as soon as they can, if only to see how a post-apocalyptic saga should be done.
Basically another helter-skelter chase through a lengthy obstacle course that ends with another cliffhanger in anticipation of further instalments.
The action is strong but it lacks narrative and character intrigue although fans of the books by James Dashner should be happy.
Visually appealing, fast-paced, hollow.
With star turns from Aidan Gillen and Lili Taylor, this young-adult sequel wades into the post-apocalyptic battlefield.
