Doctor Zhivago

Drama, Romance, War

The life of a Russian physician and poet who, although married to another, falls in love with a political activist's wife and experiences hardship during the First World War and then the October Revolution.

The critical consensus

Whatever its flaws, films made with this much chutzpah last forever. Doctor Zhivago wears its daunting runtime like the lightest of shawls and, even after all these years, it's still worth surrendering your heart to.

****(*)Emma Simmonds, The List, 23/11/2015

With real contemporary relevance, this 50th anniversary rerelease reminds us it’s impossible not be swept along by David Lean’s epic film.

*****Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 26/11/2015

Sharif's Zhivago may be a poet with a beautiful soul, but you cannot help but notice how badly he treats his wife Tonya Gromeko (Geraldine Chaplin), and how little attention Lean pays to her plight.

****(*)Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 27/11/2015

There’s more emotion and depth in that single 30-second shot than there is in all the quivering lips, moist eyelids and curses to the sky that make up the remainder of this turgid, loose-leaf history lesson.
