Our Kind of Traitor (15)

Thriller

A couple find themselves lured into a Russian oligarch's plans to defect are soon positioned between the Russian Mafia and the British Secret Service, neither of whom they can trust.

The critical consensus

Unsurprisingly, a larger-than-life Skarsgård is the show-stopper, even if the film as a whole is solid rather than spectacular.

***(*)(*)James Mottram, The List, 09/05/2016

An entertaining but lightweight espionage thriller.

***(*)(*)Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 10/05/2016

This is meat-and-potatoes Le Carré given a generic spy-movie treatment, but still it reels you in.

***(*)(*)Mike McCahill, The Guardian, 12/05/2016

All those reservations tend to chip away at an honourable, enjoyable but decidedly second division le Carré adaptation.

***(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 13/05/2016

Without the budget of Bond or Bourne, director Susana White does her best to create a world that’s sleek, sexy and exciting, but it all looks a bit like a package holiday travelogue.

**(*)(*)(*)Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman, 14/05/2016

Though solid enough, this John le Carré adaptation has too little tension and too many visual cliches.

***(*)(*)Wendy Ide, The Observer, 15/05/2016

Directed by Susanna White, it nevertheless holds the attention and there are some powerful outbursts against corruption and the black economy which feel very relevant.
