Colony, The

Drama, History, Romance

A young woman's desperate search for her abducted boyfriend that draws her into the infamous Colonia Dignidad, a sect nobody has ever escaped from.

The critical consensus

Notwithstanding the efforts of a game cast, this is a grotesque miscalculation that disrespects the memory of those who perished in one of the darkest episodes in recent history by turning it into a piece of white-knuckle entertainment.

The Colony does generate some cheesy do-or-die tension in the final half hour, but most of the time it is hard to take seriously.

The final scenes are given over to the inevitable escape attempt, handled in very noisy, very predictable fashion.

**(*)(*)(*)Geoffrey MacNab, The Independent, 30/06/2016

Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl star in this ropey drama about a sinister Chilean religious community founded by a Nazi émigré.

Simplistic and sadistic, Colonia is hard to take seriously and winds up feeling an insult to the suffering of all.

**(*)(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 01/07/2016

Emma Watson and Daniel Brühl make a swashbuckling escape from a dark corner of Chilean history in this ill-judged romantic thrilller.
