Alone in Berlin (12A)

Drama

Berlin, 1940. Working class couple Otto and Anna Quangel receive the news that their only son has lost his life in the battlefield and decide to resist the Nazi regime in their very own way. Soon the Gestapo is hunting "the threat".

The critical consensus

In this affecting drama, Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson play a grieving husband and wife who embark on dangerous acts of resistance.

A well-made Euro pudding, Alone In Berlin, like The Book Thief, can’t find the depths, darkness or daring to stand out.

***(*)(*)Ian Freer, Empire Online, 19/06/2017

Stories about heroism don’t come any more understated.

***(*)(*)Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent, 28/06/2017

The stars invest the characters with a quiet dignity but a melodramatic final scene seems out of place in this otherwise low-key film.

***(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 30/06/2017

Vincent Perez’s film about subversion in wartime Berlin fails to be lifted by Brendan Gleeson’s stoic protagonist.
