Limehouse Golem, The (15)

Horror, Thriller

A series of murders has shaken the community to the point where people believe that only a legendary creature from dark times - the mythical so-called Golem - must be responsible.

The critical consensus

A great cast is let down by a script that fails to provide a compelling mystery to solve. Never mind as a big-screen production, this would be disappointing as a BBC mini-series.

**(*)(*)(*)Jonathan Pile, Empire Online, 29/08/2017

Bill Nighy and Olivia Cooke impress in this predictable yet atmospheric Victorian thriller.

***(*)(*)James Mottram, The List, 28/08/2017

Low society, high gothic, mid orgasm.

****(*)Anton Bitel, Little White Lies, 31/08/2017

Some of the Grand Guignol shock tactics are a little silly, but you can’t quibble that The Limehouse Golem is wildly over the top. That’s precisely what it is meant to be – and what gives the drama such a kick.

****(*)Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent, 30/08/2017

Bill Nighy plays the detective in this racy, feminist look at pre-Ripper London, cleverly adapted from Peter Ackroyd’s novel by Jane Goldman.

****(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 30/08/2017

That small undercurrent of social commentary adds some extra spice to a juicy whodunit.

***(*)(*)Allan Hunter, Daily Express, 01/09/2017

Bill Nighy’s detective leads a fine cast in this deliciously atmospheric adaptation of Peter Ackroyd’s Victorian murder mystery.

****(*)Mark Kermode, The Observer, 03/09/2017
