Secret of Marrowbone, The (15)

Mystery, Drama

A mystery drama in which four siblings have to deal with a mysterious and malevolent presence in their large sprawling house.

The critical consensus

Thrill-seekers are likely to be disappointed but anyone searching for an improvement on the usual mechanical ghost-train high jinks will be rewarded by a sober, well-constructed riff on classic genre tropes.

A solid rather than spectacular creepshow thriller that would have benefited from Sánchez employing a few more original ideas.

***(*)(*)Dan Jolin, Empire Online, 10/07/2018

Story-wise, Marrowbone may not add up but this is a lyrical and chilly affair in similar vein to other recent Spanish-made horror pictures in which atmosphere is always foregrounded at the expense of plot.

****(*)Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent, 11/07/2018

This terrible turkey from the writer of The Orphanage is a muddled hotchpotch of supernatural chills, shouty overacting and absurd dialogue.

*(*)(*)(*)(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 13/07/2018

A retro chiller with positively no new or interesting moves.

**(*)(*)(*)David Jenkins, Little White Lies, 13/07/2018

A decent cast of up-and-comers...are thoroughly underserved with a hokey plot that piles on so many twists to obscure the obviousness of the ending it’s hardly a surprise that Sanchéz can’t keep track of the various timelines he’s attempting to weave together.
