US sci fi drama following a doctor who runs a hospital catering to the criminal elite of a dystopian Los Angeles.
Stylishly realised against a backdrop of violence and faded Hollywood glamour, Drew Pearce’s vision of the near-future is laced with intrigue and dark humour.
Jodie Foster slays in a beautifully shot and designed noir that owes a lot to John Wick.
For all its structural flaws, Hotel Artemis makes for a wildly entertaining edition to the summer blockbuster line-up.
There’s still something charming about Hotel Artemis, despite its many, many flaws.
However contrived, this is a watchable and stylish piece of work, anchored by a very strong performance from Foster.
Pearce keeps matters brisk. He also manages continually to undercut the most apocalyptic scenes with moments of ironic humour.
Entertainingly bloody.
The plot is incidental; what matters here is the action.
Though the finely-crafted and snappy plot lacks tension, scale and a dramatic twist, Jodie Foster illuminates the screen as the “fixer”, providing heart and (for a rare change) humour to an unlikely but likeable hero.
