King of Thieves (15)

Thiller, Crime, Comedy

British crime caper, based on the Hatton Garden robbery, in which a group of aging criminals plan a multi-million pound jewellery heist.

The critical consensus

Even an esteemed ensemble can't enliven yet another disappointing take on the Hatton Garden robbery.

An old-school film about an old-school crime that brings together an impressive array of British legends. Solid, but sadly the results don’t exactly blow the bloody doors off.

Michael Caine leads an all-star cast who forfeit their dignity in a caper beset by creaking parts, bad jokes and tedious storytelling.

**(*)(*)(*)Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian, 12/09/2018

No real surprises in a watchable, run-of-the-mill heist movie.

Caitlin Quinlan, Little White Lies, 12/09/2018

Some audiences may be disappointed that King Of Thieves isn’t more of a lark along Lavender Hill Mob lines. (The film is based on a magazine article called “The Over The Hill Mob.”) Marsh, though, should be congratulated for doing his ancient protagonists the favour of taking them at least semi-seriously and for showing that OAPs can be scumbags too.

***(*)(*)Geoffrey Macnab, The Independent, 12/09/2018

The film lacks any consistent style, which only magnifies the tonal inconsistencies to the point where they become the sort of flaw that devalues the whole enterprise.
