Tales of the City is an exhibition of artworks from the contemporary art collection brought together under the broad theme of art and the urban environment.

Responses to man-made urban spaces are a common theme for the artists represented here. This exhibition demonstrates how artists document cities as they change, how they re-imagine the urban spaces we live in and how they respond to details of such manmade environments and to the social or political incidents that take place within them.

This is the first of several new displays at GoMA celebrating our spectacular new Art Fund International purchases and displaying them alongside our existing collection. Examples of these new purchases included here are Fotoecke/Photobooth by Thomas Demand and Untitled (You have searched and destroyed) by Barbara Kruger. Since 2007, GoMA, in partnership with The Common Guild, Glasgow, has been spending £1 million on a world-class collection of art, creating an exciting international context for works from our UK collection.

This scheme, funded by the charity Art Fund, London, has so far enabled GoMA to purchase artworks by artists from Croatia, Germany, Holland, North America, Palestine and Switzerland.
