The Commitments musical has been adapted from the novel by Booker prize winning author Roddy Doyle himself and stars Coronation Street legend Kevin Kennedy.
For a night of truly entertaining, undemanding, escapist fun, it comes highly recommended. Go for the utterly fabulous cast, the fantastic music and a plain old good time.
The cast of thirteen are on terrific form in a show that taps into a demotic that's as colourful as its soundtrack.
The energy of the finale ensures a guaranteed standing ovation and audiences will definitely leave with a grin on their face!
The excellent ensemble sing and play as well as they act...and thankfully avoid the trappings of jukebox musicals by skilfully extracting the tensions of youthful folly, rather than that old cliche, 'musical differences'.
Any lack of character or plot is more than made up for, particularly with the final set of songs, all of which are performed with spine-tingling energy and passion.
Musically the show was flawless but the plot was extremely thin.
Despite the lack of back-story or character development, this motley crew looks, sounds and feels like a real band. No gloss, no polished sheen, no fancy moves, just a raw and gritty gig with swearing – oh, and soul. A whole lotta soul.
