Rigoletto--Scottish Opera

On tour

Award-winning director Matthew Richardson (The Devil Inside 2016) and Olivier Award-winning designer Jon Morrell revive their powerful production of Verdi's masterpiece.  Read more …

Set in a dark and dangerous underworld where cruelty and inhumanity are rife—and women are objects merely to be played with and discarded—it tells the tragic tale of seduction, revenge and a father's suffocating love for his only daughter with a clarity that is completely compelling and utterly heartbreaking.

From the aching naivety of Gilda's first love to the dissolute revelry of 'La donna è mobile', Verdi's score is packed with some of the best-loved music in opera. Internationally-acclaimed baritone Aris Argiris heads up a cast of exciting talent including Lina Johnson, much-praised for her Gilda in Trieste in 2016;  award-winning British tenor Adam SmithDavid Shipley, a recent graduate of the prestigious Jette Parker Young Artist programme; and Scottish Opera Emerging Artists Alexey Gusev, Lucy Anderson and Bethan Langford. British Conductor Rumon Gamba conducts.

The critical consensus

Now almost two hundred years old, tonight’s performance of Rigoletto proves that it is still very much a piece for our times, particularly in Trump’s America and pre-Brexit Britain, portraying, as it does, a world where the poor and the innocent suffer, and the rich and powerful receive no comeuppance for their crimes.

*****Max Scratchmann, The Wee Review, 20/10/2018

At least we had the pungency of Verdi’s score to
balance out the pros and cons of this mixed bag Rigoletto, which conductor Rumon Gamba and the Scottish Opera Orchestra shaped with insistency and bite.

Memorable and distinctive.

Mark Brown, Scottish Stage, 30/10/2018

Scottish Opera has managed to maintain their stamp, bringing their wall-breaking aesthetics to the capital with magnanimous vocals.
