Love Hurts

“It’s like Tricia says - love hurts; cystitis stings; and up-the-a***-wrecks-havoc-with-an-eiderdown.” Read more …

New neighbours have moved in at 41 Primrose Place and they’ve caught Susan’s attention.  She’s unsure of their African Marigolds in the front garden, can’t understand why they’d have a light blue couch and don’t even get her started on the mop bucket they’ve just carried in (it’s never been used).

However, she does find the couple rather nice, too nice perhaps… and Number 33 agrees, her blinds haven’t stopped twitching since they moved in.  Something is going on behind their closed door, something bad, dirty, unspeakable and Susan is determined to find out exactly what it is.

Love Hurts… sometimes keeping up with the neighbours is murder.

The critical consensus

If Susan isn’t a totally convincing character, that’s only because the text aims primarily to amuse. And Toni Frutin certainly has us giggling, and even guffawing.

Presented as a new series of small-scale works from random Accomplice “designed to make the audience gasp, giggle, and greet in a variety of intimate or unusual settings.”Despite its slim nature, for the most part you’d have to say the show delivers on most of those promises.

Alan Chadwick, STV, 19/10/2011

In the end, this story of suburban swingers seems more 1970’s than 21st century, and its point is far from clear.
