A lone girl dares to be something nobody has been – in a place nobody dares to go. The path is long, there will be trouble ahead and there are things out to get her . . . Take a deep breath, step into the unknown, and be prepared for your world to turn upside down.
Join the hunt. (Not suitable for those under 12).
The set, a dangling forest of light bulbs, colludes nicely in the timeless zone that director Douglas Irvine encourages but the text is initially plodding, larded with too much static background in-filling: the wood may be a dangerous place, but it’s where the drama lies.
Douglas Irvine directs with an overarching grace and sense of beauty that stays in the mind, even as the detail of the story begins to fade.
The science may be fanciful but the impulses run deep in an engrossing production.
While the pace is on the whole rather languid there are some enjoyably scary moments, with the sense of otherworldliness heightened by an ingenious forest set – created from row after row of hanging lights.
