It’s Hogmanay in a Glasgow wash house, and the girls need to get their washing done before the bells. Join Dolly, Magrit, Doreen and Mrs Culfeathers as they laugh and cry their way through the last day of the year – with a little help from the not so handy Andy. Read more …
Roper says “In my late forties I sat down with a biro and a jotter and wrote my first ever play.
25 years have since passed and The Steamie is still there, giving laughter and tears and touching that intangible something in an audience that has made it a favourite night out. My gratitude to all the actors, designers, directors and audiences over that quarter century who have made it happen. I am looking forward immensely to working with the marvellous and talented team in this production who will take it forward into the next 25 years.”
Roper's own 25th anniversary production is flying from the off.
Writer Tony Roper directs this anniversary tour with all the necessary attention to the comedy, but he also understands the poignant intimacy of the piece - particularly in David Anderson’s songs - as well as capturing society on the cusp of modernity...This is a production that skips past the nostalgia to find the irony in society’s dreams in past times.
An achievement to be treasured, as this fine postwar classic sets off around the country, not much changed, and still as powerful as ever.
On the strength of this outing, it's looking good for another quarter-century.
Of all the Scottish plays out there, it’s The Steamie that can be best compared to mince and tatties and not just for comfort value.
Roper's play has not faded in humour or emotional impact in the twenty-five years which it has played: The Steamie remains as fresh and as welcoming as crisp white bed linen.
