It is all still there and the packed audience in Glasgow rose to its feet at the end, as they did at that thrilling first night in Edinburgh four years ago, so it is all clearly still working.
John Tiffany’s direction remains utterly dazzling, even after repeated viewings.
It remains, though, a show of astonishing power, not a complete history of the Black Watch, but a tragic, hilarious, lyrical and unforgettable snapshot of the views and attitudes of its ordinary soldiers, caught in the wheels of history at a crucial turning-point for the whole British army, for Western policy in the Middle East, and for global politics.
As relevant now as in 2006, Black Watch will be one for the history books.
Black Watch’s message is a relevant now as it ever was.
Black Watch is an utterly mesmerising tribute to the men that fight for our country in one of the most controversial wars in modern history.
This performance offers something for everyone: action, excitement, special effects, music, men in uniform, teamwork, patriotism and even a lesson in history.
