Wonderful Town won five Tony Awards including 'Best Musical' when it premiered on Broadway in 1953 and has since won countless more awards.

The critical consensus

The success of this musical lives or dies on the relationship between Ruth and Eileen, and Fisher and Van Gasse make a winning combination.

So it's no dramatic masterpiece; but Braham Murray, directing what seems to be his last Royal Exchange production, and choreographer Andrew Wright are happy to accept it as it is – a flurry of brilliant sketches.

Connie Fisher brings the requisite pep and sparkle to this feel-good revival, leading an effervescent cast in a production that’s almost 60 years old, but which gleams with the polished sheen of a cared-for classic.

The end result is a bright, breezy slice of the Big Apple guaranteed to send you home with a smile on your face.

Alan Chadwick, STV, 09/05/2012

Whilst the musical has been around 1953, its exceptional cast, high-production values and glorious orchestrations make this Wonderful Town feel as groundbreaking and exciting as it might have on its original opening night.
