Further Than the Furthest Thing

Set on a remote island in the middle of the Atlantic, based loosely on the real island of Tristan da Cunha, Further Than the Furthest Thing tells the story of a small community isolated from the world beyond the ocean.

Island life appears simple and pure but when a new visitor arrives, past secrets threaten to erupt and destroy the calm. When an apparently dormant volcano becomes active, the inhabitants are forced to flee their homes in search of a new life. Read more …

Arriving in a place of industry and progress, the islanders are soon put to work and must quickly adapt to their new surroundings.

Can they ever return to their island? The truth will slowly unravel and life will never be the same again.

Contains strong language and partial nudity.

The critical consensus

Harris has created an overlong three hour epic, but Brining has tackled it head on, creating a memorable swansong.

Joy Watters, Across the Arts, 01/05/2012

Brining’s haunting production powerfully ramps up the tension, employing increasingly distorted layers of sound to convey the despair experienced by the islanders in their new habitat.

If the play is good, James Brining's production...is stunning.

*****Mark Fisher, The Guardian, 30/04/2012

Of breathtaking quality.
