Overall the piece is lightweight and underwritten.
This underlying drama, though, doesn't quite survive the surface blandness of Tamara Harvey's production; or its bourgeois tendency to side with young Horatia, as if the glorious, vulgar Emma - a woman of the people, in her origins - was obviously mad, and not really our kind of person at all.
Tamara Harvey’s clear, dynamic direction, picks right through to the emotional relationship between the two (lead characters).
Calais’ plot and characters are understandably outdated and at times alien.
