Dirty Paradise

Maria has had enough of the world. Broke, misunderstood and frustrated, she can't get her magician husband to make the strange sounds in her head disappear. When her car breaks down in the desert, she finds herself in an asylum where the food is free, the drugs are kicking and games are always allowed after 2pm. Read more …

But Maria can't run away from the cruel world forever.

Inspired by a short story from Nobel Prize winning novelist Gabriel Garca Mrquez, Dirty Paradise is a charming and heartfelt human story about dealing with inner demons, and voices. The piece will feature innovative use of sound and space to create a very beautiful, thrilling and sensory experience.

Performed as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival 2010. Dirty Paradise  was developed through consultations with individuals with lived experience of mental illness and auditory hallucinations and organisations such as the Hearing Voices Network and NHS Scotland.

The critical consensus

A compelling performance...a fantastical journey.

Shona Craven, Onstage Scotland, 05/10/2010

(Actress Leann) O’Kasi manages to pack a similarly contemporary punch to her performance, which, in Alison Peebles’s production, feels like the most natural flesh and blood extension to her words.

****(*)Neil Cooper, The Herald, 07/10/2010

After its initial promise, however, the story pulls its punches.

Dirty Paradise is not an easy show to watch; but it has energy and theatricality to burn, and its final, dazzling message is one of hope, rising from the ashes of unimaginable pain.

****(*)Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman, 09/10/2010

This is a long-overdue play that questions our attitudes towards those suffering from mental health problems-and it thankfully does so without judgement or hysteria.
