Lung Ha tours Scotland with two short plays inspired by the famed playwright

2010 marks the 150th anniversary of Anton Chekhov’s death. These two new plays, by Carol Rocamora, have been inspired by two of Chekhov’s short stories and the production will feature four members of Lung Ha’s Theatre Company’s performing group together with live music created and performed by Wendy Weatherby. In The Two Volodyas our familiar Chekhovian heroine, Sofya, finds herself at a crossroads; married to her wealthy husband Volodya yet still in love with her childhood sweetheart; a younger more attractive Volodya. Whilst drinking more than perhaps a lady should, Sofya longs for an alternative to her two Volodyas.

In Romance with a Double Bass, Pitsikatov is a young musician on his way to a Royal engagement. However, his journey soon takes a farcical turn, when he falls in love, loses his double bass and finds he only has a top hat to preserve his modesty.

Maria Oller directs the highly talented cast Mark Howie, Kaye Parter, Stephan Tait and Nicola Tuxworth. The Assistant Director is Jenna Watt and set and costume design is by Jessica Worrall and Lighting Design is by Liam Boucher.

The critical consensus

This fine team of actors defy narrow 21st-century stereotypes of beauty and romance to produce a delightful performance in the best Chekhovian style, aglow with deep humour, passionate sadness, and the true, sexy energy of living theatre.
