Hunter is ably assisted by both the young cast around him and the outfits that Jennifer Melville conjures for him. Rachel O’Riordan, whose arrival in Perth as director last year has galvanised the theatre, directs with wit and energy.
There’s no shortage of traditional panto routines – including egg-citing egg jokes – and the audience participation goes with a swing; and if the mood is a little less convivial than it might be, that’s because we see too much of the villain, and not enough of the unambiguous forces of sweetness and light, that finally defeat him.
