Only the Lonely

Only the LonelyLeslie Black Photography

Diane, fiftyish, is down on her luck after yet another disastrous relationship. Read more …

Her dad, Tony, is there to pick up the pieces as he always does. But she’s anything but grateful. Jim is Diane’s age and he’s quite happy living with his elderly mother, Sadie, and would wrap her in cotton wool if he could. But she’s feeling smothered and would rather lead her own life. When Jim finds Tony wandering in the street he steps in to help. This chance encounter forces everyone not only to change their plans for the day but ultimately changes how they spend the rest of their lives.

The critical consensus

Given how little depth there is to either the writing or characterisation on show, the four-strong cast do their best to bring some warmth and life to this generation-gap piece about wanting the best for your kids.

So far, so predictable, Yet if the play represents a fairly conventional reminder that the middle-aged are often more confused than their elders, it’s so well handled, in Liz Carruthers’s flawless production, that the light-touch comedy and straightforward humanity are almost irresistible; and the audience cheer the show to the echo, as a richly comic yet accurate portrayal of a situation all too familiar, and one that’s bound to touch most of us, sooner or later.
