Hairspray

The West End's favourite musical comedy, Hairspray is back on the road. Read more …

Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart as she sets out to follow her extraordinary dreams, inspire her mum and win the boy she loves.

Stage and screen star Mark Benton will lead the company of the award-winning musical comedy Hairspray when it embarks on a UK and Ireland tour in 2013 and will play the larger than life Turnblad family matriarch Edna in the show. Mark will be joined by ex Eastenders actress Lucy Benjamin in the role of scheming TV executive and archetypal ‘showbiz mom’ Velma Von Tussle, and newcomer Freya Sutton as big-hearted, big-haired teen heroine Tracy Turnblad.

The critical consensus

For sheer entertainment value you have to say that Hairspray is right up there with the very best of them.

Alan Chadwick, STV, 10/05/2013

Hairspray is what happened whilst Sandy and Danny were off brushing their teeth, a fun and feisty picture of a world in flux which is endlessly entertaining from beginning to end. It is the perfect combination of music, movement and ensemble, a massive Broadway production with a heart bigger than Edna Turnblad’s unmentionables.

*****Scott Purvis, WhatsOnStage.com, 09/05/2013

Hairspray is an uplifting, fun musical and the songs, including “You Can’t Stop the Beat”, “Welcome to the Sixties” and “Good Morning Baltimore” will stay in your head long after you leave the theatre.
