They return to his backwoods home. Only then does she discover he has six brothers - all living in his cabin. Milly sets out to reform the uncouth siblings, who are anxious to get wives of their own. Then, after reading about the Roman capture of the Sabine women, Adam develops an inspired solution to his brothers’ loneliness - kidnap the women they want!
The 25-strong company keeps it going with energy and pace. The singing from the principals is strong and tuneful, and while the dancers can throw each other over their heads, as soon as spin each other round, they give equal power to the music.
It's rootin' tootin' rollicking fun with terrific, athletically energetic dancing and well-sung, if largely unmemorable, songs. Enjoy the singing and dancing, ignore the limp (and in these politically correct days, somewhat questionable) storyline and you'll have a great evening.
Regardless of whether you like old style musicals or more contemporary ones, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is good old-fashioned fun, and can still entertain an audience almost 60 years after it first appeared on screen as an MGM musical.
