Tonight's the Night

Rod Stewart is quite simply one of the best selling recording artists of all time. In a career spanning five decades he’s as  popular now as ever with his acclaimed new album ‘Time’ topping the UK charts, a sell-out Arena Tour in 2013 and last year’s No.1 Bestseller Rod - An Autobiography. Read more …

Tonight’s the Night, the smash hit West End musical comedy inspired by the songs of Rod is the all-singing, all-dancing feel good show which went on to play sold-out theatres across the UK. Tonight’s The Night is back and now is your chance to rediscover the magic of timeless classic songs, from Maggie May to Baby Jane and Hot Legs to Sailing plus many more!

Set on the mean streets of Detroit and in the glamorous clubs of uptown LA, Tonight’s the Night tells the story of a shy young man, so tongue tied that he cannot find the courage to declare his love to the girl of his dreams. How different he is to his hero, that legendary rock n’ roll vagabond Rod Stewart - now there’s a guy who never had any trouble hitting on a girl! One night our hero strikes a deal with the Devil, trading his soul for Rod’s. It seems like a good idea at the time but this guy is about to find out the hard way that you can’t find true love using another man’s moves and that devil or no devil, there’s only one Rod Stewart!

The critical consensus

The sheer talent of the cast deserves to be seen far and wide, and their performances will, as Rod himself once sang, stay with me.

Director Caroline Jay Ranger and Choreographer Denise Ranger have worked hard to create a spectacle of a show, and they and the hard-working cast succeed, but in the end it is still let down by a lack of original story.

Although it has never quite matched the success of Ben Elton’s previous jukebox musical - the world-conquering We Will Rock You - this love letter to the songs and attitude of one Roderick David Stewart is the superior show by far.

Chris Bartlett, The Stage, 22/01/2014

I could sense that the audience were trying to have a good time with some joining in the singing but the atmosphere at the interval was muted.

As this speeds by, dialogue pared right back, there is hardly any time between songs. Of course this isn’t Goethe, or anything other than a piece of puff musical theatre, yet even a little more dramatic input would help audiences engage more with the characters.

Tonight’s the Night is a fun night out and even if you’re not the biggest Rod Stewart fan, you’ll still know at least a few of the songs and be swept up with the rest of the audience. By the end, you will be on your feet, swaying, singing, dancing and having a great time – the audience on opening night certainly were!

If you forgive the holey (almost non-existent) plot and concentrate on the music you’ll have a half decent night.
