The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain

Paris is being terrorised by the evil Cardinal and a monstrous creature who suffers from serious mood-swings. Read more …

The young sword-fighter D’Artagnan finds himself on an epic quest to save the city - and a Spanish Princess - but he will need the help of The Three Musketeers. Rumour has it they’ve gone to seed, gone past their sell-by date and gone into hiding. So, first of all, he has to find them.

Based on the iconic characters created by Alexandre Dumas, this hilarious, anarchic and thrilling new production promises an unforgettable journey into enchanted forests, over lost streams and around REALLY horrible baddies, as we cheer our hero D’Artagnan and heroine Constance to a victorious end.

Featuring live music and a hefty dose of laughter, The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain is a wonderfully surreal re-imagining of these classic stories of friendship, love and identity. Oh…and baby-eating monsters!

The critical consensus

Rude, anarchic, witty, intelligent, irreligious and coarse.

*****Mark Fisher, The Guardian, 08/12/2010

Not a pantomime, not a fairy-tale, not a Christmas show; but a great family show just the same.

Robert Dawson Scott, STV, 08/12/2010

Maybe not one for all the family, but one that will appeal to those longing for some non-PC humour and anarchy.

****(*)Mary Brennan, The Herald, 08/12/2010

A brilliantly insane reworking of a classic tale – or an inane and lavatorial attempt to be different for its own sake – the seasonal offering from the Traverse Theatre is destined to divide audiences into five-star and one-star opinions.

*****Thom Dibdin, Edinburgh Evening News, 08/12/2010

A clever, complex, and edgy new beast of a Christmas show, driven by an angry anti-clerical scepticism that Dumas would have recognised, combined with a ferocious 21st-century obsession with the bloody magic of fertility.

****(*)Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman, 10/12/2010

While parts are overdone and others drag impatiently, the joyful final scenes create a warm atmosphere that’s comfortingly festive despite its non-Christmassy setting.
