Henry V

“Awake our sleeping sword of war…
We would not seek a battle as we are,
Nor, as we are, we say we will not shun it”

June, 1915. The Great War is not yet one year old. A Glasgow school hosts its annual Gala day and Prize-giving…

You, the family and friends of all our scholars and teachers, are invited to the fete. A variety of entertainments will be on offer, not least our ‘Grand Patriotic Pageant’, in which the whole of our school performs Shakespeare’s great classic; Henry V.

Can our cockpit hold the vasty fields of France? Or may we cram within our wooded O the very casques that did affright the air at Agincourt?

These are dark days for our country. But amongst the gathering gloom all the youth of Scotland are on fire.

P.S. Our Headmaster has asked me to remind you that although the Pageant begins at 7.45pm, various other entertainments will be available from 7.15pm onwards.

The critical consensus

Sadly, hard though it tries, director Jennifer Dick’s production does not do it justice.
