Henry IV

“Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown”

Henry IV has won the crown from Richard II but his throne faces rebellion and his health is failing. As the King prepares for war, his son Prince Hal is languishing in brothels and taverns in the company of the notorious Sir John Falstaff.

Can Hal face up to the responsibilities required of an heir to the throne? Will he ever be able to live up to his father’s expectations? And when the time comes, will he be able to choose between duty and loyalty to an old friend?

Our “Lesser Spotted Shakespeare” programme continues this year as just 3 actors perform Shakespeare’s great historical drama in the magnificent surroundings of the Kibble Palace and explore what it takes for Hal to eventually become Henry V.

The critical consensus

Gordon Barr’s ingenious and impressive three-handed version.

Over the years, the Bard in the Botanics has attempted many ambitious adaptations. This wonderfully crafted, brilliantly paced Henry IV must, surely, be among the best.
