This adorable production layers joy on joy, joke on joke, in a delightful evening of theatrical absurdity featuring P.G Wodehouse’s iconic double act. Read more …
When a perfectly delightful trip to the countryside takes a turn for the worse, Bertie is called on to play matchmaker and steal a cow creamer from Totleigh Towers. Of course, the ever dependable Jeeves is there to prevent Bertie from making a fool of himself in front of a cast of Wodehouse’s finest characters. Enjoy an evening of raucous comedy in the company of Gussie Fink-Nottle, Madeline Bassett, Sir Watkin Bassett, Aunt Dahlia, Roderick Spode and Constable Oates!
Jeeves and Wooster impressively manages to resolve some but not all of the technical problems involved in bringing a much-loved classic to the stage and whilst it is not perfect it is far from being nonsense.
This is a delightful reminder of how funny good old Jeeves and Wooster are – it may be time to dust of the novels for a well-deserved re-visit over the cold winter months.
The show emerges as an irresistibly jolly celebration both of Wodehouse himself, and of the power of theatre, celebrated in a glorious final soft-shoe shuffle that has the audience roaring its approval.
It is far from perfect, but it is perfectly entertaining.
It is this lack of realism that helps give the production a timeless feel. In the end it is as much about the magic, artifice and joy of theatre as it is about the source; either way, it is terrific fun.
The play-within-a-play idea gives the whole enterprise a sense of real zip. Or as Bertie would say, it’s spiffing.
This is without doubt an absolutely spiffing night out.
