A young generation, caught up in its violence and hatred, perpetuates a situation over which they have no control. When Romeo and Juliet, children of the two mortal enemies, meet and fall passionately in love, they set in motion a chain of events that will destroy not only themselves but many of their friends.
Barr’s attempts to give the piece a sense of contemporary relevance, particularly through carefully choreographed violence and hard-edged electronic music, are overwrought and unconvincing, leaving the Bard’s tragedy looking like a sub-standard, 21-st century West Side Story.
