The Belief Project

You're standing by yourself, nothing between you, the sky and the future. At this moment. In this place, after all that you've done, and seen, and thought, what makes you different to a fox in the city or a bird in the air or a cockroach in filth? What sets you apart? Read more …

The Belief Project is a new play from Glasgow based theatre and arts collective Flatrate, which examines the place of belief in the modern world and tells a simple and moving story about three people trapped, like a whole generation, in a difficult place between faith and doubt. A fledgling couple with great aspirations take in a lodger to make ends meet when the recession bites, but find themselves on a downward path toward dehumanisation and disconnection.

Developed from an original idea by writer Stephen Redman, the production has been conducted as a collaborative process from start to finish by director Rob Jones, with a cast of actors recruited to devise based on Redman's texts and inform his further writing, building on rehearsal techniques developed for Flatrate's last show in the Tron Theatre Changing House, The Zeros Keep Going. For young company Flatrate, it represents the next stepin an endeavour to make collaborative theatrical events that are relevant and innovative whilst also being entertaining and engaging.

The play sees the theatrical debut of Gaelic singer-songwriter Dòl Eoin, who joins the company fresh from working on his own music with BBC Alba and his band, Potential Strangers. The role marks the seasoned musician's first foray into performance, and has involved composing a number of songs and melodies for the play as a part of the process in character as Scot, a singer/songwriter having a self indulgent crisis of faith. Three weeks from the production, and with the script still in flux, Dòl Eoin has been covertly touring open mic nights around the city giving performances by Scot and handing out the character's home-made demo.

Flatrate's work depends on a sense of adventure and a collaborative relationship with their audience which they have developed at their monthly scratch night and weekly radio show, Initial Itch. This relationship enables them to offer platforms for new ideas and experimentation, and pull together the right individuals to work on productions like The Belief Project.

The critical consensus

Amy Conway's performance as Kim is close to heartbreaking and Richard Gadd makes Mark at times funny and even sympathetic despite the unpleasantness of the character.
