The war in the battlefield is over. The war between Beatrice and Benedick has just begun. Read more …
Young couple Hero and Claudio believe nothing can damage their love. Beatrice and Benedick believe nothing would ever make them fall in love.
Love is the victim when gossip and lies are the weapons and things take an abrupt turn, plunging from comedy to tragedy, as the sinister intrigues of Don John threaten to tear lovers and friends apart.
Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s most frequently performed plays that gives us one of Shakespeare’s wittiest comedy of words, loyalty and the search for love.
Benedick and Beatrice offer a romance worth believing in Irene Macdougall’s intelligent, well paced production.
A vivid and handsome interpretation of a play that revels in how beautifully mixed up a love story can be.
The 12-strong ensemble is firing on all cylinders, often playing straight to the audience, to celebrate the Bard.
In the end, it both delights the audience, and succeeds in making us feel the bold ambivalence of a great, many-layered comedy that flirts darkly with death, but also offers a rare vision of true love between a strong, articulate and witty woman, and a man who is, just possibly, the first male feminist hero in western literature.
In the end, the warm, bright colours and sparkling back and forth between Winter and Jack stay with us like protective clothing as we brace ourselves for the dreich night outside.
All in all, this is a beautifully crafted, fabulously confident rendering of a great Shakespeare comedy. On this showing, the Rep need look no further than MacDougall in its quest for a new artistic director.
