Doctor Faustus is the inaugural production in a new strand of work for Bard in the Botanics, showcasing the work of Shakespeare’s contemporaries – Writing the Renaissance. Don’t miss this thrilling and theatrical new adaptation of Marlowe’s iconic classic, played by three actors in the spectacular setting of the Kibble Palace Glasshouse.
As stories of possession and demonic power go, this is about as luridly complex as it gets, with the show’s mighty soundscape and Marlowe’s poetry lifting the drama to spine-tingling heights; and offering a memorable finale to one of the most impressive Bard In The Botanics seasons of the last 20 years.
Despite the best efforts of an accomplished cast, the production is undone.
In all, this is a coherent, enjoyable interpretation of the play, even if it does make a few false moves.
