Almost four years since its last production Harold and Maude at the Tron, Theatre Jezebel returns with the Scottish premiere of A Steady Rain, from House of Cards and Mad Men writer and producer Keith Huff. Read more …
Two Chicago cops Joey and Denny look out for each other – Joey helps with Denny’s wife and kids and Denny keeps Joey away from the bottle. When they are faced with a domestic disturbance call that takes a turn for the worse their lifelong, almost family-like, bond is put to the test. Trust, honesty and loyalty struggle to endure the brutal reality of the lives of these two best friends.
This fantastic production is a must- see for anyone looking for a gritty, heart-wrenching, fantastically acted drama. Don’t miss out.
As Denny and Joey's criss-crossing monologues gather steam, they rise into a torrent of self-loathing which, for one of the men, at least, finally subsides into a raging calm in a quietly thrilling experience.
Mary McCluskey’s fine production for Theatre Jezebel, at the Tron, does little to challenge the essentially static quality of the script.
There's almost a comfort in the predictably of the story, that never manages to delve into the two men's personalities, rendering them symbolic extremes in a focused morality play. Like Denny himself, Steady Rain comes on hard, but hides a sentimental, and confused, heart.
