Based on his smash hit film and adapted for the stage by Oscar-winning writer Simon Beaufoy, this hilarious and heartfelt production stars Gary Lucy, Andrew Dunn, Louis Emerick, Chris Fountain, Anthony Lewis, Kai Owen and a cast of fourteen and is directed by Jack Ryder. Not only has the play been getting standing ovations every night, but it also won the prestigious UK Theatre Award for best touring production.
In true striptease style, there is a great deal of teasing before the final performance, but it does not disappoint when it arrives, and the journey there is always of interest.
After two hours of torment and teasing, more than a pound of flesh is owed to the audience. Very little is given away too early, director Jack Ryder clearly knows what a good portion of the audience is here to witness and by heavens, they are made to wait for it. Trust this reviewer, it’s worth it.
It’s an evening that will make you think as well as chortle.
The audience are roaring with laughter throughout, building up to the climax – the part they are all there to see, and whilst these men keep their hats on we take ours off to them.
A piece of popular drama that pulls no punches about the humiliation of unemployment, but treats its characters with real affection and dignity, to the end.
Leaving the theatre, seeing so many smiling faces, it was impossible to avoid the feeling that this was a show which gave its audience exactly what it wanted.
